DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, on the first of July at https://na-hradb
ach.cz/\n[https://na-hradbach.cz/] at 7 pm for a discussion on the relatio
	nship between\nreligion and politics.\n\n\nLocation: Nahradbách\nDate: Wed
nesday\, July 1st\nTime: 7:00 PM\n\n\nAbout us: Asamblea Abierta de Praga
is a leftist collective established by\nmigrants and locals in Prague. Wit
h our work\, we seek to build broad and plural\nalliances with other simil
ar groups and people in the city.\n\n-------------------------------------
	--------------------------------------------------------------------------
	--------------------------------------------------------------------------
	-------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nPol
itics and religion have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship for as\
nlong as human history can recall. Whether it's a theocracy that utilises
the\nstate to enforce its will and silence dissenting voices\, or a state
co-opting\nreligion and exploiting ideological fervor in its populace to a
dvance and\nlegitimise its own ambitions.\n\nThat's not to say that human
civilisation hasn't brought about any progress in\nproviding checks and ba
lances against divinely ordained power\; most of the world\nno longer oper
ates under a feudal system with a monarch appointed directly by\nthe heave
ns. But having said that\, matters seem to be taking a turn for the\nworse
. Heads of state increasingly justify wars and mass murder through\nscript
ure\, as battles between good and evil\, the devout and the sinners. Cultu
re\nwars are regularly propagated and inflamed through portraying one side
as a\ncorrupting influence on a pure\, virtuous society.\n\nSo why has re
ligion persisted for thousands of years? Surely\, societal pressure\nand t
he threat of eternal damnation can't alone explain this resilience? Why do
\nbillions of people around the world proudly proclaim to be followers of
their\nchosen religion? Many find religion offers community\; followers ga
ther at places\nof worship\, religious holidays bring friends and family t
ogether who otherwise\ndon't get to meet as often as they'd like. At its b
est it can unite people with\notherwise vastly different backgrounds\, kno
wing that they share a belief in the\nsame dogmatic system\, a belief syst
em that dwarfs any material differences\nbetween them. This sense of belon
ging to a greater cause is especially profound\ntoday\, with more and more
people finding themselves disillusioned with their\ncareers\, social live
s\, and an existential lack of meaning.\n\nSo perhaps most importantly\, r
eligion fills this void and offers us purpose and\nsolace - comfort in the
knowledge that there's more to life than the time we\nspend in this physi
cal reality. That there's a greater meaning and reward to be\nearned in th
e afterlife for our virtues and our suffering in the material world.
