DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Imagination as a Sensory Power: An Energy at the Edge
of Human\nExistence\n\nSpeaker: Prof. Dr. Sepp Gumbrecht (Stanford Univers
ity)\n\nOver the past few decades\, debates among analytic philosophers ha
ve brought a\nnew clarity to the broad conceptual field of “imagination” t
hrough incisive\ndistinctions\, thereby directing intellectual attention t
o how this faculty is\nused in everyday life. Seen in this light\, any foc
us on its effects as “sensory\nimagination” marks a return to classical no
tions about connections with\naesthetic behavior. At the same time\, it pr
ompts a new reflection on the status\nof objects of consciousness\, which\
, despite resembling perceptions in their\nphysical vividness\, are not de
pendent on environmental impressions as\nperceptions are. How does imagina
tion succeed\, to paraphrase a pressing\ncontemporary question not only fo
r scholars of the humanities: how does\nimagination succeed in suggesting
various possibilities for transcending real\nexistence through literary fi
ctions and myths of higher worlds?\n\nHans Ulrich Gumbrecht is the Albert
Guérard Professor in Literature in the\nDepartments of Comparative Literat
ure and of French & Italian (and by courtesy\,\nhe is affiliated with the
Department of Iberian and Latin American\nCultures/ILAC\, the Department o
	f German Studies\, and the Program in Modern\nThought & Literature). As a
scholar\, Gumbrecht focuses on the histories of the\nnational literatures
	in Romance language (especially French\, Spanish\, and\nBrazilian)\, but a
lso on German literature\, while\, at the same time\, he teaches\nand writ
es about the western philosophical tradition (almost exclusively on\nnon-a
nalytic philosophy) with an emphasis on French and German nineteenth- and\
ntwentieth-century texts. In addition\, Gumbrecht tries to analyze and to\
nunderstand forms of aesthetic experience 21st-century everyday culture. O
ver the\npast forty years\, he has published more than two thousand texts\
, including\nbooks\, translated into more than twenty languages. In Europe
and in South\nAmerica\, Gumbrecht has a presence as a public intellectual
\; whereas\, in the\nacademic world\, he has been acknowledged with Honora
ry Doctorates (twelve in\nall) from universities in Canada\, Denmark\, Ger
	many\, Hungary\, Portugal\, Russia\,\nand Georgia\; with the most recent f
rom Leuphana Universität Lüneburg (Germany)\nin July 2017. He has also hel
	d a large number of visiting professorships\, at the\nCollège de France\,
University of Lisbon\, University of Manchester\, and the\nCatholic Univer
sity of Rio de Janeiro\, among others. In the spring of 2017\, he\nwas a M
artin Buber Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, Israel. He\nrec
ently taught in the Stanford's Bing Overseas Program at the campus in\nSan
	tiago\, Chile (spring quarter 2018).\n\n * June 9\, 2026: 6pm (c.t.) to 8p
	m (s.t.)\n\n * Lecture Hall XV\, Main Building\, University of Bonn\n\n *
