MONDO VIDEO III: Kampf der Welten - Chaostage 95 (1996, 92‘, DF) & Nie wieder Arbeit - Die APPD, der legale Arm der Chaostage? (1998, DF)
11th of July at Filmrauschpalast Moabit!
After our last Mondo Video trip took us into the far reaches of Southeast Asia, we now want to head back to our own (punk) roots.
For every adolescent punk of the 2000s, there was a bible of destruction in the form of the legendary found-footage film Kampf der Welten – Chaostage ‚95, available on VHS through every punk-relevant mail order and a must-have in any household. The film splices together original TV footage from Hanover — whose Nordstadt district was literally reduced to rubble during the 1995 punk gathering aptly named Chaostage — with scenes from Byron Haskin’s The War of the Worlds (1953). After watching it, any reasonable person will want to take home a mohawk.
The massive scandal around Chaostage ‚95 also spurred the newly founded Anarchist Pogo Party of Germany to run for the first time as an electable party in the federal elections. Nie wieder Arbeit – Die APPD, der legale Arm der Chaostage? was released as the party’s official propaganda video, featuring interviews with members, booze-soaked party conventions, and provocative demonstrations through downtown Munich. It stars punk legends like Karl Nagel, Maik Froidl, and beloved talk-show guest Erich Zander — making it an absolute must-watch for anyone who hates working and has a shred of humor.
Philipp Meinert — punk socialization in the Ruhr region, writer for Plastic Bomb Fanzine, co-editor of Punk in Deutschland, author of Homopunk History (Ventil Verlag) and former sleazy APPD member — gives the introduction to both films.
The evening will be entirely in German, but we invite all expats to come experience a piece of German history with us. As always we will screen both films from original VHS tapes.
